Amphibians
On
Silhouette like on the rest of the Seychelles, the amphibians are only
represented by frogs and worm salamanders (caecilians).
Frogs
Sooglossidae
An
endemic family only living on Mahe and Silhouette, with a unique way of
reproduction, living 250 meters and higher in the tropical rainforest of the
Seychelles.

Sooglossus
seychellensis
|
Is
a mist-forest frog, 3 to 4 cm long living above 400 meters. The eggs are laid on
land on a flat humid surface. The male guards the eggs until they hatch. The
small tadpoles wriggle up his back, and stay there, consuming their big yolk
sacs until they metamorphose, and jump off his back as mini-adult frogs.

Sooglossus
gardneri
|
Is
one of the smallest frogs in the world, maximum 11 mm, and can be found from 200
meters and higher, dwelling the forest floor. Similar to S. seychellensis the
eggs are laid on land on a flat humid surface, but contrary to S. seychellensis,
they don’t have a tadpole phase, but hatch as tiny adult frogs

This little frog was recently discovered by dr. Justin Gerlach. It has about the same size as
S. gardineri,
more information is very
scarce. Until now they were only found in the leaf pits from
young palm trees in the high mountain forest of Silhouette. Photo:
